In June 2025, members of the Steel Strips Society visited the company Danieli in Buttrio, Italy, a global leader in the production of equipment for metallurgy and metal processing.
The main goal of the excursion was focused on the professional thematic part—production and development of equipment for metallurgy.
We were presented with the company’s history, production portfolio, and new trends in the steel industry.
There was a presentation of new applications and investment projects in upstream technology, where the trend is integration of the entire production process into a single line and reduction in the number of rolling stands.
An investment project was also presented involving direct casting of thin strip, immediately followed by a finishing sequence of hot continuous rolling.
There was also a presentation of new applications and investment projects in downstream hot rolling technology—although Danieli has extensive experience with continuous cold rolling lines, primarily for the automotive sector.
This was followed by a presentation of the “Danieli Service” division, focused mainly on maintenance of equipment in the steel industry.
Excursion to the Danieli production plant:
- Tour of areas for manufacturing, assembly, and commissioning;
- Production of sliding bearing housings for rolling mills (fluid-film “Morgoil” bearings for backup rolls);
- Testing equipment – non-destructive testing and dimensional parameter inspection.
Visit to the “Danieli Automation” division:
- Use of digitization and AI in equipment design and testing;
- Assembly of PLC control systems and verification of proper operation under various working modes.
- Presentation of the design and application of automated crane systems and transport equipment in the steel industry.
As part of the excursion, we also visited landmarks in the vicinity of Udine and Trieste.
